Day 11-13 –> Beaufort, SC – Witheville, NC:
Our Hotel Howard Johnson in Beaufort was beautiful and we were finally able to eat our fill at the breakfast table. The route afterwards: smooth asphalt in beautiful sunshine and we repeatedly crossed rivers on long bridges. We soon reached the next hotel and with it the next day a fantastic sunrise.
Today we have to go through Charleston. A slightly larger city. Right at the beginning we crossed rivers and bays again, until suddenly a tangle of highways and motorways loomed in front of us. From a distance we could see the huge “Arthur Ravenel Jr.” Bridge, onto which we crossed the Cooper River in somewhat daring maneuvers. From above you could see a museum ship, the aircraft carrier “USS Yorktown”. The river crossings were repeated and with them the landscape, which was somehow reminiscent of Louisiana. The next day we were supposed to reach North Carolina and on the way there were many places worth seeing like Conway with historic houses and parks waiting for us.
